Beware of MP Text Scams!

The Queensland Parliament has become aware of scammers impersonating Members of Parliament (MPs) in a new SMS scam offering fake "welfare payments". Don't fall for it!

HOW THE SCAM WORKS

Scammers typically:

1.      Begin with a personal detail

They reference something specific about the individual (for example, a change in family circumstances, employment status, living arrangements or childcare). This is designed to build trust.

2.      Offer a fake welfare cash payment

They claim you might qualify for financial support and request bank account details so the payment can be “processed”.

3.      Demand an upfront payment

The scammer states that a cash payment or gift card is required before the welfare payment can be released.

4.      Request further payments

In many cases, once the first payment is made, the scammer continues to request additional payments over several months.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

  1. Understand the role of Members of Parliament

    • MPs are not allocated welfare funds to distribute to constituents.

    • MPs do not send unsolicited messages offering financial assistance.

  2. Verify any unusual contact

If you receive a message claiming to be from your MP, contact their Electorate Office directly using the official contact list  Member List | Queensland Parliament.

  3. Limit personal information online

Be mindful of the information you share publicly. Scammers often use social media details to tailor their approach.

  4. Review and update your social media privacy settings

Ensure your accounts only share personal information with trusted contacts:

  5. Check in with family and friends

Vulnerable members of the community are often targeted. Encourage them to speak up if they receive suspicious contact.

A NOTE FROM SHANE

I regularly make phone calls to constituents across the Kurwongbah electorate, as do members of my team. I sometimes send text messages with information or well wishes too. I will NEVER ask for your bank account details, ever. If you want to check if a message is from me, please call my office on 3448 9100 or email kurwongbah@parliament.qld.gov.au .
